Desobedecer el Deseo - Work in Progress
A 10-year journey of resistance through embodied research
Desobedecer el Deseo (Disobeying Desire) is a hyperrealist critical research creation that has been evolving for over a decade as an itinerant intervention/installation. This ongoing work emerges from the intersection of contemporary dance, performance, theater, music, circus and audiovisual languages, questioning the very essence of being/existing as an interpretive hybrid of the arts.
The project operates as a living laboratory that challenges the reflexivity of both performer and audience, moving beyond confessional self-justification toward what I call "reference reflexivity." This approach recognizes that the investigator becomes the investigated, creating a nomadic, durable process that exists in the midst of worldly things.
At its core, Desobedecer el Deseo interrogates the performativity of gender and sex within a space where feeling and thinking can be put into play. The work seeks to represent subjective gender-social "roles/reflections" that differ from those we socially resist, gestating new environments traversed by this investigation of gender and sex through the expressive physical movements of the body.
The choreographic sets and expressive physical movements explore notions of over-exposure, literality, permanence, representation, cultural displacement, expressionism and hyperrealism. The work aims to highlight and disrupt the "hyperreality" of misogynistic, heterocentric, homophobic, patriarchal, androcentric systems through what I term "choreographic contamination" - a deliberate disruption of established movement vocabularies.
This creation positions scenic arts, contemporary dance, performance, singing and theater as sites of resistance to the various centrisms in which we find ourselves trapped. The work asks: Can we conquer the space in which we move as an abundant place that belongs equally to all participants? What territories of resistance would be bordering on the appropriation and manufacture granted in this creation?
Desobedecer el Deseo functions as a living manifesto against established sexual and social norms, creating a sensitive, living and latent investigative map. It's a space of spaces that allows itself to be broken by fundamental questions: Are we free to choose the values we want? What is sex, what is gender? What can we reconstruct and create from this questioning?
After ten years of development, this work continues to evolve as a testament to the power of sustained artistic inquiry. It represents not just a performance piece, but a methodology for approaching the body, identity and resistance through the lens of interdisciplinary artistic practice.
